PONDA: Fed up with rumours and frequent inquiries by people of Ponda and surrounding villages regarding an ‘upcoming lockdown’, the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) held a special meeting on Monday to discuss the widespread speculation.
Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, PMC Chairperson Venkatesh Naik urged Ponda locals ‘not to fall prey to rumours that Ponda will be shut down’. He added that some people with vested interests have been behind the rumours that the market will be shut down.
“PMC has no plans for such a shut down. Only the Disaster Management Committee can decide on a lockdown for a particular area.” said Venkatesh.
He also urged locals not to rush to the market for shopping. He added that due to the rush and crowds for buying wish, the fish vendors will be shifted to the open space on the ‘airport road’ behind the Ponda market.
He also referred to how local unemployed youth have started their business of selling fish and vegetables during the COVID lockdown. He said that such initiatives will be encouraged and that place will also be provided to them in the Ponda market as it will help reduce the unemployment rate in the town’s population.
He added that if the Health Department distributes medicine to improve the immunity of the citizens, then the councillors are ready to distribute it to the locals.
