Panaji: A Goa police constable, accused of murder, allegedly committed suicide in a police lock-up. Following this, three police constables were suspended on Friday.
Arrested this week for the murder of one Ratan Carol, originally from Rajasthan, police constable Devidas Sinari was found hanging from the roof of the lock-up in North Goa district in the wee hours of Friday. The incident happened at the police station at Usgao, 25 km from here.
Sinari was arrested after the severed, decomposed limbs and the headless corpse of Ratan Carol, who was reported missing since December 17, surfaced at different spots in the Chapora river.
Police believe that the murder was a result of personal enmity. Sinari’s brother, Dattaguru, is also an arrested accused in the case.
The brothers had earlier threatened Carol over a petty matter, Gaonkar said, adding they were booked under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information) of the IPC. A suicide note was found in the toilet claiming his innocence.
The three constables suspended following Sinari’s death are Surendra Narukkar, Ramakant Sanvordekar and Paresh Parab.
“They have been suspended pending inquiry,” Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Umesh Gaonkar told the media.
The deceased is suspected to have been brutally murdered by two brothers, Devidas Sinari, a police constable, and Dattaguru Sinari of Amona, Bicholim, on Wednesday over an altercation.
Bicholim police said Biju Gopi, who runs a garage next to the sugarcane juice kiosk of the deceased, is learnt to have told the decased to keep a watch over his shop during lunch hours. Police said that when the deceased was keeping vigil, Devidas and Dattaguru Sinari allegedly opened the partially-downed shutter of the shop and took away material from it. At this juncture, the deceased confronted them. Police say this may have enraged the accused and provoked them to take such an extreme step.
