Murder attempt charge for attacking Afghan student

Police arrest fourth ‘prime accused’ on Tuesday

PANJIM: The Panjim police have invoked charge of attempted murder against four accused, booked for assaulting an Afghanistan student on January 19. The police also made fourth arrest on Tuesday, who is said to be the prime accused in the case. 
“We have added Section 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code to the current First Information Report (FIR). The accused will now be prosecuted for this offence as well,” a senior officer said. 
On Tuesday, the police team caught hold of Jonty Correia from Divar, more than a week after his associates were nabbed on charges of causing grievous injuries to the foreign student. He has been remanded to four days police custody. 
Desmond Fernandes, 29, and Suresh Meghari, 20   both residents of Taleigao   were arrested last Tuesday, a day after police arrested Maharashtrian Satish Nilkante. Jonty was absconding since then. 
Matihulla Aria, pursuing M.Com (Part I) from Goa Business School at Goa University was stabbed by a group of four men at Dona Paula on January 19. He was rushed to a private hospital where he was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and later shifted to the private ward. 
A First Information Report (FIR) under Section 326 (causing grievous injury by using dangerous weapons) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code was initially registered based on a complaint filed by Professor Rahul Tripathi, Director of Foreign Students at Goa University. Two of the three accused, arrested last week, have been released on bail while one is in the judicial custody. It is learnt that their custody might be sought again as per fresh charges pressed against them.
