CHORAO: A 45-year-old tea shop owner from Devgim-Chorao was injured after he was brutally assaulted by some persons near Grace Church, Madel-Chorao, on Saturday night.
According to reports, Sunil Betkekar is running his tea shop at Saude-Chorao, which is 5 kms away from the incident site. As usual, Sunil closed his business at 9.30 pm and was on his way home when some persons took him to an isolated spot in Madel.
Sources informed that the accused persons must have hit an iron rod or hammer on Sunil’s head, which left him unconscious at the site.
Sources further informed that when Sunil failed to return home at his usual time of 10 pm, his relatives and friends went in search of him. It was at about 1 am when Sunil’s scooter (GA-07-J-1456) was found parked near the church, while Sunil was found lying in a pool of blood some 50 metres away. He was rushed to GMC Hospital in Bambolim.
The Old Goa Police on Sunday went to the site and conducted inquiry with the locals and relatives.
When contacted, Chorao Police outpost said only constables are posted there and only hawaldars have a right to register the compliant. “We all are constables and we do not have the vehicles or two-wheelers to patrol at night. We have to manage with our two-wheelers in times of emergencies.”
Speaking to Herald, the victim’s brother-in-law Sidharth Matodkar said, “I had seen Sunil proceeding on his scooter at about 9.45 pm on Saturday and one well-built person was sitting behind him, but I failed to recognize the person, as he was wearing a raincoat. Police should nab the person and I hope Sunil will be able to divulge the name of the culprit,” he said.
When contacted, Old Goa PI Krishna Sinari said police will conduct the enquiry.
