PANJIM, SEPT 9
Governor Dr SS Sidhu has extended warm greetings to people of Goa on the occasion of Id-Ul-Fitr.
Governor in his message said: “on the auspicious occasion of Id-Ul-Fitr, I extend my warm and cordial greetings and best wishes to the people of Goa, especially the Muslim brethren.”
In our continuing efforts to further strengthen the egalitarian and secular foundation of our society, it is our bounden duty to draw inspiration from the values and virtues of all religions that thrive in our country. Prophet Mohammad blessed us with the eternal message of love, compassion and universal brotherhood. At this juncture when the world is afflicted with violence, social tensions, communal hatred and religious fanaticism, the perennial message of Prophet Mohammad assumes much greater relevance to be followed by all people, irrespective of their religious background, the Governor said.
Goa has proudly inherited the distinction of being a place where people from various faiths live in peace and harmony, sharing the joy and sorrow of each other. Id-Ul-Fitr is a solemn occasion for all of us to celebrate with unity and friendship, in order to further promote peace, harmony and secular outlook, the Governor added.
In his message Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat said that Id is a culmination of month-long fasting and keeping away from all evils. Fasting also helps experience hunger and develop compassion for the less fortunate. Id is a day of joy and thanks giving and also of forgetting ill feelings about others.
Archbishop-Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao has also greeted the Muslim community on the occasion of Id-Ul-Fitr.
“We cordially greet our Muslim community and wish them joy and serenity as they end their Ramadan, a month that they have spent in prayer, fasting, helping the neediest and strengthening relations of family friendship,” stated Archbishop Ferrao in a press note.
“Christians and Muslims: Together in overcoming violence among followers of different religions’ is the theme the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue has proposed for this year.”
“Among other measures, this Vatican Department has appealed to recognize and respect the dignity and the rights of each human being, without any bias related to ethnicity or religious affiliation and to promulgate just laws which guarantee the fundamental equality of all.”
“Let this feast be an occasion to further these values,” added archbishop Ferrao.
