Muthalik’s plea to visit Goa rejected

MARGAO: Ram Sene Chief Pramod Muthalik’s plea that he will only visit temples and ashrams and would not address any public meetings or participate in any public function in South Goa did not find favour with district Magistrate Venancio Furtado as he rejected his plea to visit the district for 10 days in February.

And, in a sheer coincidence, while director Tauseef de Navelim celebrated his 50th Konkani show Akantwavi Goent Naka on Friday, the district Magistrate banned Muthalik from entering South Goa citing Ram Sene’s objection to the Konkani tiatr having its shows in different parts of  the district.
While rejecting Muthalik’s plea to visit Goa in the interest of maintaining public peace and tranquillity in South Goa,Venancio said the prohibitory order dated January 15 has been issued to prevent Muthalik and any person associated with the common intention of causing breach of peace, law and order or disturbance of public tranquillity.
The district Magistrate conceded that Muthalik could have visited the religious places during the period when the prohibitory order was no in force.
But, Venancio also said that it was also not known about the location of the the Ashram Muthalik will visit during his stay in South Goa.
Muthalik’s lawyer Adv Nagesh Takbhate had forcefully argued that it is the fundamental right of every person to have freedom to practice religion and that the court cannot restrict his client nor dismiss the application.
Speaking to Herald, Adv Nagesh said he has telephonically informed Muthalik on the order passed by the district Magistrate. “We will study the Magistrate’s order before chalking out the future course of action”, Adv Nagesh said, while disclosing plans to challenge the order in the High court.
