PANJIM: The attack on a woman, reportedly from North East, at Porvorim has caught the attention of the National Commission for Women (NCW).
The alleged attacker, also a woman from Porvorim was arrested for criminal intimidation and causing hurt but soon released.
While the police are tight-lipped, sources said that two girls from Sikkim and two from Nepal were initially heckled by a local woman, living in a Police Colony at Porvorim. The victim girls were walking on the pavement when Arati Naik allegedly waylaid them and asked them to go home.
Some people, present at the time of the incident, did not try to stop the local from resorting to the alleged crime. While the three victims left on being allegedly threatened, one stayed back, who was later manhandled and assaulted.
It is learnt that the local allegedly made racist remark against the victims. The police have however denied the allegation.
The video of the incident, allegedly shot by an individual known to the victims, has gone viral attracting attention of the NCW.
“NCW has come across a FB (Facebook) post wherein few North East girls were brutally attacked, abused, by a lady and her daughters, living at Police Colony, Porvorim. Further alleged, local police did not file any complaints, instead, threatened them to refrain 4m (from) registering any complaint,” the NCW said in a tweet. The NCW has also sought for an inquiry into the alleged attack and steps to provide security to the girls.
The Goa Police thereafter acted upon the complaint by arresting Naik. Goa Police’s official twitter account informed that FIR was already registered and the accused woman arrested.
“Thank you for sharing your concern. An FIR has been regd (registered) in the matter at PS (Police Station) Porvorim on a complaint recd (received) from the victim. The person accused has been placed under arrest. No allegation of racism has been made by the victim. Security of women is our priority!” the police wrote.
The woman is booked under Sections 323 (causing hurt), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) read with 34 (common intension) of the Indian Penal Code.
