Nadkem village finally gets electricity

Nadkem village, a small hamlet with just 18 houses is situated in the midst of the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary in South Goa. For generations now, Nadkem has had no electricity and the locals depend on natural means to provide for themselves.

When former MLA Isidore Fernandes looked to electrify the village, he was faced with a problem since the village was situated in the middle of the sanctuary.
However, in 2006, a solar cum wind generating unit was installed in the village but it soon broke down due to the locals’ expansive abuse of it. Thereafter, MLA of Canacona, Ramesh Tawadkar along with the sarpanch of Loliem, Bhushan Prabhu Gaonkar and the then AE of Canacona electricity, Santosh Lolayekar took up the matter in 2011. The forest department finally gave permission and underground cables were laid, with conditions in January 2015.
The electricity connection was finally inaugurated by Power Minister, Milind Naik in the presence of Ramesh Tawadkar and sarpanchs of various panchayats in the taluka.
