“We want a library and hope the next council will do something to start a library here,” said local activist Oscar Martins.
Cuncolim has one degree college, two higher secondary schools, five high schools and ten primary schools. Students, senior citizens and the general public find it difficult to fulfill their urge to read. Students require a library for project works and assignments. The teachers also can benefit from a library while senior citizens in the area feel the facility of a library would help them spend time constructively.
Cuncolim has a Class ‘B’ Municipal council which has a population of more than forty thousand but it lacks basic civic needs. Many years ago, former South Goa MP, Fransisco Sardina constructed a library but the building has been left unused for the past several years and has now turned into a scrap yard. The council has been dumping tools and other unwanted material in this building while some labourers use it as a changing room. CMC sources claimed that the building isn’t in proper condition and they have plans to renovate the building in order to construct a new library.
