MARGAO: After the ‘Employment Bureau’, and a system to check the influx of migrants, now, the village panchayat of Nagoa has come out with yet another innovative initiative to start planting medicinal plants and trees across the village. Panch member Anzil Godinho said that medicinal plants and trees will be planted on public property across the village, including Church property and on Comunidade land.

On Saturday, the Village panchayat of Nagoa in association with the Primary Health Centre, Cortalim, and Ayushman Bharat Ayush Health and Wellness Centre, Cortalim, held an awareness camp for children titled ‘Ayurveda in our Life’, under the guidance of Dr Anup Naik Nearly 500 students participated in the event.  “We can hardly find the plants and trees having medicinal value, growing in the State. Interestingly,  today’s generation is unaware of the importance of growing natural remedies, and hence this awareness camp was organised to educate the children,”said Godinho.

He said that the aim of the program was to show young children how Ayurveda can help in our daily lives, to increase wellness. Gabrial Fernandes, Nagoa Sarpanch told Herald that henceforth the panchayat will be holding awareness campaigns and encourage the villagers to grow more medicinal plants and trees. “We will tie with the Comunidade and villagers in order to push for the cultivation of medicinal plants,” he said. It may take years to grow and be utilized in medicine, but our descendents will definitely benefit from these medicinal plants in the future, said the panchayat.   It is pertinent to note, that a few months ago, the same panchayat had launched an initiative called ‘Employment Bureau’, and before that, implemented a system to keep tabs on the influx of migrants into the jurisdiction of the panchayat. A few days ago, Herald had published a report about medicinal plants and herbs, titled ‘As forests in Goa vanish, so do traditional herbs that cure everything from jaundice to common cold’.
