Nagoa residents up in arms over water shortage

Calangute: Residents of Mendes Vaddo, Arpora, have alleged that while big hotels and buildings in their locality are getting piped PWD water, around 45 households of locals have been without water for the last five days.

On Tuesday, residents held a protest meeting outside the Arpora-Nagoapanchayatghar to demand an immediate resolution to the acute water shortage that has plagued the area for the past five days.

John Fernandes, a resident, said the PWD water pipeline valve which regulates supply to their houses has been jammed, blocking off water to their locality.

“We have been patient for far too long. Water is an essential need for every human being, and it is the responsibility of our elected representatives to ensure its availability,” another resident of Mendes Vaddo said.

“Our children are attending school, and the elderly in our community are suffering without water. Sometimes there’s no water for 10 days. We cannot tolerate this negligence any longer,” he added.

The residents later met Calangute MLA Michael Lobo who assured them that he would bring the PWD junior engineer to their locality within a few days and rectify the problem. “Almost all places in Goa are facing water shortage and we have urged the government to find some long-term solution,” Lobo said.
