MAPUSA: In a stroke of luck, a family of five narrowly escaped tragedy when a massive mango tree fell on their vehicle on a Sunday afternoon at Oxel, Siolim. The family was en route to Dabolim airport in a rent-a-car.
Mapusa Fire Station In charge Ashok Parab said that they received an emergency call at around 2.40 pm, alerting them about a tree collapse on a car and an electricity line near Kshetrapal temple. A team of fire personnel rushed to the scene and discovered five people, including an infant and a five-year-old child, trapped inside the car. The rescue operation began with the removal of tree branches that had fallen onto the vehicle. The fallen tree blocked the road, necessitating traffic diversion from the Marna direction.
The injured individuals were identified as Laleharbir Singh, 40, Priya Singh, 36, who sustained an injury to her right leg; Ritu Dhaya, 34, Mira Singh, 5, and Samira Singh, a 4-month-old baby. The estimated loss due to the incident is around Rs three lakh.
