PORVORIM: Former deputy chief minister Dayanand Narvekar stated that there should be limit for reservations, which should be given on economic basis.
Speaking to press persons at his residence at Mapusa, Narvekar said the State is known for highest per capita income, high literacy, etc, and hence the total income of at least Rs 6 lakh per annum should be the cut off for all reservations like educational facilities including medical and technical, etc.
“Government spends huge amount on subsidy both, direct and indirect, under different sectors and schemes. Government spends nearly Rs 25 lakh on a doctor, Rs 20 lakh on a degree engineer, etc, Rs 15 lakh on polytechnic engineer and Rs 10 lakh on ITI, etc, by ways of subsidy,” stated Narvekar.
“The subsidy is basically meant for economically weaker sections of the society. However in Goa, mostly everybody gets the benefit of the subsidy irrespective of their income. In the process, many a time economically better off people manage to corner the benefits, depriving the same to the needy,” said Narvekar.
“If the creamy layer, irrespective of class, is excluded from government subsidy net, then poor people will be benefited,” added Narvekar.
Narvekar further stated that he believes in casteless society and he has not intention to hurt the feelings of any community like OBC, SC, ST, etc. He has stood for certain principles in life for social justice enshrined in the Constitution of India.
In a letter to Rahul Gandhi apart from his views on reservation policy, he has suggested that only one government job should be given per family.
“In Goa, it has been observed that two or three members of well to do family are government employees, while members of some poor families do not get a job in government department at all, which is absurd,” said Narvekar.
