PANJIM: As reported by Herald on Tuesday, the 36th National Games, scheduled to be held in March-April this year, have been rescheduled to after the monsoons due to security and forthcoming elections, the Games officials said.
The Games Technical Conduct Committee chairman Mukesh Kumar, along with Executive Director Sports Authority of Goa and Gurudatta Bhakta held a meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Sports Minister Manohar (Babu) Azgaonkar and Chief Secretary Parimal Rai to discuss the postponement of the Games.
“The meeting was to discuss the postponement of Games as the organising committee felt there was some issues of bypolls, Lok Sabha polls, school exams and so also unavailability of volunteers,” GTCC chairman Mukesh Kumar told reporters here..
Asked whether infrastructure was a reason for postponement, he replied, “Infrastructure is not a problem as work on two stadiums is presently going on and it will be completed by February end or March.”
About whether Goa will have to pay any fine due to a delay to the Indian Olympic Association, he said, “I cannot say anything on that it is between Indian Olympic Association and the State government”.
