MARGAO: Farmers from Navelim were livid to find that waste from neighbouring areas had been dumped right near their fields, thereby causing them great hardships.
The farmers pointed out that there are two problems with the dumping of garbage. The first is that the pathway that they used to bring their tractors and other farming equipment into and out of the fields has been blocked by the mounds of garbage. Secondly, they fear that if proper action is not taken, this area could become a regular spot for dumping mixed garbage.
After the farmers approached the Navelim panchayat, Sarpanch Lucia Carvalho inspected the area where they found information about who the waste materials belonged to.
The Sarpanch gave an assurance that action would be taken against the people who had dumped the waste at the site.
The farmers added that they would also be approaching the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).
Incidentally, GSCPCB officials had already inspected the area in the recent past and are aware of the struggles faced by the farmers of Navelim who are trying to cultivate their fields but are facing obstacles due to various forms of pollution.
