MARGAO: Taking serious note of noise pollution, villagers of Navelim have urged the authorities to act against vehicles with unauthorized modified exhaust silencers. The villagers have expressed their frustration over the disturbance caused by these vehicles, emphasizing the need for enforcement of regulations to curb noise levels. The issue was prominently discussed during the gram sabha meeting held on Sunday, where villagers urged the panchayat body to promptly bring attention to the problem of unauthorized modified exhaust silencers.
They emphasized the need for immediate action by the concerned authorities to address noise pollution caused by such vehicles. The villagers voiced their concerns about the disturbance and inconvenience faced due to loud vehicle noises. Carmello Carneiro, a resident of Navelim, emphasized the seriousness of the issue, noting that two-wheelers and cars in the area are frequently equipped with modified exhaust silencers. He highlighted the significant impact these modifications have on noise levels in the community, pointing out the disturbance caused to residents.
He had even moved a proposal before the panchayat body. “As there are still people recovering from the Covid-19 trauma in their homes, there are patients staying in roadside apartments and houses suffering from serious heart ailments, undergoing dialysis, managing diabetes, and taking medication for hypertension and high blood pressure,” he informed. “Additionally, there are senior citizens who regularly go for morning or evening walks to maintain their health, and there is also an old age home in Navelim.” Carmello Carneiro highlighted the diverse health challenges faced by residents of Navelim, underscoring the need to address noise pollution caused by modified exhaust silencers
In addition, Carneiro also mentioned concerns about the academic year following the implementation of the new National Education Policy. He noted that students are increasingly attending extra classes to excel in their respective subjects.
“However, violators with modified silencers have created havoc in the vicinity of Navelim, including near educational institutions, by driving bikes and cars with these modifications,” he stated.
