In a compelling display of unity, Navelim residents took to the streets on Wednesday to protest against the persistent non-functionality of traffic signals at the key junction adjacent to the Furtado petrol pump. The impassioned crowd voiced their concerns about the escalating frequency of accidents and the daily ordeal of traffic congestion resulting from this issue. Local authorities, including the MLA, were summoned by the community, demanding swift and effective action to address the problem.
The centre of attention was the Bellem junction at Navelim, where the non-operational traffic signal poles have become a source of frustration for the locals. Venting their frustration, the villagers issued a stern ultimatum: if the installation of functional lights and signboards does not commence within the next 7 days, they are prepared to take matters into their own hands by removing the redundant signal poles themselves.
George Barreto, a resident of Navelim, conveyed a clear warning to the authorities, emphasizing that the residents are left with no choice but to take matters into their own hands if their legitimate demands continue to be ignored.
Local MLA Ulhas Tuenkar also expressed his disappointment at the lack of action by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the traffic department in addressing the persistent issue. Nonetheless, he assured the community that he recognizes the urgency of the situation and is committed to expediting its resolution. The MLA’s assurance has instilled a glimmer of hope among the residents that their grievances will finally be addressed.
This collective display of concern by Navelim residents underscores their determination to ensure their safety and the smooth flow of traffic. As the issue gains prominence, all eyes remain on the authorities and their response to the villagers’ demands.
