At a press conference on Saturday, several villagers spoke about the dedication of Alvares in taking up various issues affecting the village and Goa.

Navelim residents said the politicians today have sole intentions of making money while sacrificing the cause of Goa and Goans.  Alvares has been at the forefront of many agitations like the demand for NH-66 to be built on stilts, needless acquisition of a huge tract of cultivable land for the buffer zone of the sewerage plant at Navelim. He also defended Navelim against the attempts to give up any more wards for the expansion of the Margao Municipal area, they said.

Alvares is the Joint Secretary of the MSSG (Movement for Special Status for Goa).  At present he is the Vice-Principal of Rosary Higher Secondary School, Navelim.  He was the former president of the Goa Vocational Teachers Association.

He was also the Navelim Block Youth Congress president.
