MARGAO: Taking serious note of repeated accidents, the Navelim gram sabha on Sunday resolved to urge the Public Works Department (PWD) to repair the non-functional traffic signals and erect sign boards at Bellem-Navelim junction immediately.
Sarpanch Lucia Carvalho chaired the meeting and several issues were raised by the villagers, including garbage and bringing barren land under cultivation.
A group of citizens raised the issue of Bellem-Navelim junction which has turned into an accident prone zone in absence of non-functional traffic signals. Recently, locals had even warned the authorities of removing poles erected for traffic signals if not repaired at the earliest.
After a lengthy discussion, gram sabha resolved that the panchayat body to write to PWD on the issue and demand earlier repairs of the signals. Another major resolution passed at the gram sabha was to bring remaining barren agricultural land under cultivation.
The issue pertaining to garbage was also discussed at the meeting wherein it was resolved to conduct a survey of commercial establishments and households in order to start with garbage collection fees in the jurisdiction of the Navelim panchayat.
Villagers also demanded to stop issuing the construction licences on the eco-sensitive zones, including keeping strict vigil on the illegal hill cutting activities, informed Pereira.
