Navi Mumbai native held for smuggling gold

VASCO: The air intelligence unit at Dabolim airport arrested a Navi Mumbai native for trying to smuggle 1.397 grams of gold worth Rs 38 lakh through the airport on Monday.

According to information, the AI unit increased its vigilance of all international arrivals after a tip-off about the smuggling attempt. Officials grew suspicious of one Santosh Malgaonkar, who had arrived from Dubai by an Air India flight in the morning. During a search, they found 12 undeclared gold bars of around 10 tolas hidden in an iPad bag, which he had checked in as hand luggage.
Custom officials registered a case against him under Section 104 of the Customs Act. This is the tenth seizure at the airport in last two months, with over 30 kilos of gold seized.
