NCC and SCPCR Join Forces to Transform Lives in Goa

In a remarkable demonstration of solidarity and compassion, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has teamed up with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) unit of Fr. Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar – Goa, for a noble cause. Their joint mission: to renovate huts for the nomadic Katkhari tribal families residing at Virnoda, Pernem. This initiative, held on May 3, 2024, signifies a crucial step towards improving the living standards of marginalized communities in Goa.

Under the leadership of Prof. Anthony D’Souza, 30 dedicated NCC cadets descended upon Virnoda to refurbish 20 huts, aiming to provide safer and more dignified shelter for the tribal families.

The Goa SCPCR has been unwavering in its commitment to uplifting children from marginalized backgrounds, particularly the Katkhari tribal community across Virnoda and Nirankal. Over the past year, the commission has implemented targeted interventions in healthcare, nutrition, hygiene, and education, fostering an environment conducive to the holistic development of children.

The success of this endeavor was made possible through the generous support of the Hands of Hope Foundation, which provided essential tarpaulin sheets for the renovation process. Additionally, logistical support from the Human Touch Foundation ensured the seamless execution of the activity.

Anjali Harijan, an NCC Cadet from Fr. Agnel College, shared, “Being part of this initiative goes beyond the uniform; it’s about embodying the values of service and compassion instilled in us by the NCC. Through our collective effort, we’re not just providing shelter; we’re fostering hope and resilience within the Katkhari community. Today, we stand united in our commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

Peter F. Borges, Chairperson of Goa SCPCR, expressed, “Our collaboration with Fr. Agnel NCC Cadet underscores the transformative force of solidarity in effecting meaningful change. By refurbishing these shelters, we are not just constructing physical spaces; we are also revitalizing the spirits and aspirations of the Katkhari tribal communities, instilling in them a renewed sense of dignity and optimism.”

Fr. Fredrick Rodrigues, Principal of Fr. Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, emphasized, “At Fr. Agnel, we believe in nurturing socially responsible individuals who actively contribute to the betterment of society. This initiative underscores our commitment to instilling values of empathy and service among our students, preparing them to be compassionate leaders of tomorrow.”
