PANJIM: While the Congress is still dragging its feet in announcing candidates for the two parliamentary seats in Goa, its old ally in the State Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has confirmed tickets to party President Nilkant Halarnkar and young leader Yuri Alemao for North and South Goa parliamentary seats, respectively.
Party’s chief spokesperson Trajano D’Mello confirmed the development. “We received a communication from party general secretary Prafulla Patel
confirming the two candidates for the parliamentary seats,” he told Herald. With this, the campaigning will soon kick-start. Goa is going to polls on April 12.
The long-standing alliance with the Congress party broke after the latter announced to go it alone this Lok Sabha polls. Asked to comment, D’Mello said, “The alliance seems to have been broken at the state level.”
Reacting to Congress’ candidate from North Goa Ravi Naik’s statement about continuing the alliance, the NCP leader said, “His statement is a response to public sentiments who believe we have to work jointly. Naik had told reporters during an interaction that two parties should continue and that if there is a roadblock for the alliance he would not hesitate to withdraw from the fray. The party members consider BJP as its biggest competitor followed by the Congress.”
