NCP: Restore names deleted from electoral rolls

MARGAO: After the Congress, now the Nationalist Congress Party has strongly demanded the restoration of names of the voters deleted from the electoral rolls.

The NCP has appealed to the Election Commission to rethink on the decision of deleting names of thousands of voters arbitrarily.
“The people whose names are deleted are shell shocked and don’t know what to do now and we hope, you will take appropriate decision to uphold the dignity of the constitution and democracy and give justice to these affected people,” NCP President Jose Philip D’Souza wrote in a letter to the Election Commission.
After hearing grievances from affected people and after verifying the facts presented by them, the NCP has serious concern about the legality of the decision taken, D’Souza wrote in the letter.
“The NCP feels that certain vested interests are behind the decision where by a single stroke of pen, names of thousand of voters are deleted from various parts of Vasco constituency,” D’Souza wrote.
Terming the deletion of names as a “daylight murder of democracy”,  D’Souza alleged that the decision to delete the names was taken for the political benefit of certain people.
“This is a clear abuse of power and government machinery by some people who have vested interests,” the NCP president alleged. “We are knocking your door as a last hope of justice and to protect the constitutional rights of thousand of voters,” he concluded.
It may be recalled that the names of over 25,000 voters who have given up their Indian citizenship were deleted from the voters list earlier.
