PANJIM, JAN 31
The Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Court at Mapusa today issued a notice to the Special Investigating Team (SIT) after civil right activists complained Home Minister Ravi Naik was using the police force to threaten them into withdrawing or deleting a crucial name in the criminal complaint in the police-drug dealers nexus case.
Activist Kashinath Shetye said that the court issued a notice to the SIT to reply to their application by Monday when the matter will be next heard.
In an application before the NDPS court on January 24, Shetye and 12 others alleged that Police Inspector Sudesh Naik warned them to withdraw the name of one ‘Roy’ from the complaint.
“On or about January 12, 2010, Sudesh visited the applicants at their residences and asked them to withdraw the complaint or at least delete the name of “Roy”…Sudesh Naik claimed to be acting on the instructions of the home minister (government of Goa), Superintendent of Police Mangaldas Desai and Deputy Superintendent of Police Shamba Sawant,” the application read.
The complainants have asked the police to probe the police-drug dealers mafia nexus which included “One Mr Roy, who has a substantial presence in the drug industry as a drug lord.” The complaint, however, does not mention Roy’s surname.
The applicants had requested the court to direct the SIT to probe into all persons named in their complaint letter including former Anti Narcotics Cell Superintendent of Police Veenu Bansal and “Roy”.
Sawant incidentally probed into the spy-cam video showing police sub-inspector Sunil Gudlar selling drugs to two foreign women – Ayala Driham and Zarina, both kin of jailed drug lord David Driham alias Dudu. Gudlar is presently under suspension even as SIT is conducting an overall probe.
