MAPUSA: The entire costal belt from Vagator to Candolim on Monday witnessed a “near total lockdown” as all the restaurants and shacks remained closed; barring a few in Anjuna and Baga.

When asked why the restaurants were open, the owners replied that they are closed for the public and that the staff members are sitting inside and watching TV.

Earlier in the day, a few general stores were opened but the police directed the owners to shut down.

With not a single restaurant or shop open, few domestic and foreign tourists, who were in the coastal belt in Bardez had to literally search and walk the distance in search of water and food.

When asked a foreign tourist, who was walking on the streets of Calangute, she said she is searching for food.

“Only medical stores are open but these stores cannot serve food. I am here in Calangute to have my time but due to the Coronavirus scare, my return flight has been cancelled. Today, I had whatever was there in the fridge but, now I don’t know what to do in the next two days.”

Police were also found patrolling the costal belt while some were deployed at Calangute Beach promenade and at the main junctions. Police had installed barricades at major junctions and circles.
