Need to conduct a scientific study of Goa’s carrying capacity: Ex-Union Minister

Suresh Prabhu says everyone wants to come and settle in Goa, the country’s most loved State; urges State government to protect the Western Ghats ecosystem

PANJIM: Former Union Minister for Industry and Commerce Suresh Prabhu on Tuesday stressed the need to conduct a scientific study of Goa’s carrying capacity. 

Delivering the special address at the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) at Panjim, Prabhu said that Goa is the most loved State in the country and everyone wants to come and settle here. “Even officers wants to settle here after retirement. Goa has become an extension of Delhi and there need to conduct a scientific study of Goa’s carrying capacity. He also urged the State government to protect the Western Ghats ecosystem.

The former Union Minister discussed innovative solutions and future strategies to enhance the energy storage capabilities. Exciting times ahead for sustainable energy.

Prabhu emphasised the need to maintain the beauty of Goa and conserve its ecology to ensure locals can protect their livelihoods in agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. “We must conduct carrying capacity studies to ensure sustainable development in the beautiful and mesmerising State,” he said.

In his keynote address, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that sustainable practices in the sector of Energy require coordinated and comprehensive efforts from all the stakeholders including the government. 

“We shall continue to cooperate and make the State developed while adopting sustainable practices in energy sector,” he said.

The Chief Minister congratulated TERI and the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) for signing MoU in the field of sustainable development, renewable energy. 

Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira, GCCI president Shrinivas Dempo, Director general of TERI Dr Vibha Dhawan, environmental experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and NGOs. The theme of TERI’s 50th year celebrations in Goa was: Pioneering Sustainable Solutions: Goa’s Path to 2030 SDGs.
