PORVORIM: Stating that fatal accidents in the State have been on the decline, Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar said everybody should strive to bring down the figure of fatal accidents to zero, which is possible if each and every one starts observing every day as road safety day.
Dhavlikar was speaking at the inaugural function of 3rd State Road Safety Week-2013 jointly organized by Directorate of Transport and Traffic Cell of Police Department at Porvorim.
Speaking further, Dhavlikar said the road conditions in Goa are also partly responsible for accidents. “Considering the growth of vehicles on the road every year, the need has arisen to widen rural, district and major roads as early as possible,” he added.
“The highways should invariably be made four lanes and the State government is serious about it. Steps are being taken to provide good and safer roads to public,” he said.
Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said civic sense and road safety go hand-in-hand. “If people observe traffic rules strictly and two-wheeler riders drive their vehicles wearing helmets, then there is least possibility of fatal accidents. Accidents take place because of reckless driving,” said Khaunte.
On the occasion, the Road Safety Manual published by the Directorate of Transport was released by Dhavlikar. Assistant Director of Transport Guirish Dalvi proposed the vote of thanks.
