PORVORIM: Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) on Thursday confirmed that they will go ahead with the State government’s decision to make NEET scores the criteria for MBBS and BDS admissions instead of GCET, for the last round of admissions.
Speaking to Herald, Deputy Director (DET) Pradip Kusnur stated that DTE will go ahead and consider NEET scores instead of GCET for third round of MBBS and BDS admissions, mentioning that the admission procedure has already started and the counseling round will be held at DTE auditorium on September 30.
“The decision to consider NEET is a decision of the State government and DTE has no role. We just follow the orders we receive from the government,” said Kusnur
“The State government on the advice of Advocate General (AG) has come up with this decision, to protect Goan students who had only answered NEET and not GCET, after the Supreme Court judgment which clearly mentioned that henceforth only NEET will be considered,” he added
Stating that the third round of admissions will be completely based on merit and it is a good opportunity for students who had answered both exams, but could not get through in the first two rounds.
Students, however, are not happy with the decision. “I was completely shocked with the State government’s decision to consider only NEET. We have no choice, either take a break or take admission in a private college outside Goa,” a student told Herald.
On Wednesday evening, DTE had uploaded a notice on its website asking eligible candidates for MBBS and BDS courses to apply along with their NEET scores. Shocked students had rushed with their parents to the Chief Minister, who is also the Education Minister.
According to parents of students, DTE had first announced that the admission procedure for the seats that have reverted to Goa from the All India quota would be filled taking into consideration the GCET scores obtained by candidates.
Students said the decision to take NEET into consideration was taken after a group of students, had gone to court seeking that NEET be made as the main choice for the MBBS and BDS admissions.
