Nestle workers warn of protest outside labour chief’s office

PANJIM: Several contract workers from Bicholim’s Nestle unit went on a daylong hunger strike on Thursday protesting the company’s rejection of the Nestle’s contract workers union’s demands.

Since September 3, workers have been protesting that their union be recognized by the company. Union president Anand Shirodkar said the company had filed cases against him and another member with the Labour department at Mapusa. “The case has been transferred to the Panjim office, but we are yet to receive the details of the hearing,” he said.
Shirodkar said that if a hearing date was not given to them by September 16, the union members would protest outside the office of the Labour Commission, Panjim and continue their strike at Azad Maidan.
Currently, contract workers receive Rs 215 per day and are given increments of Rs 20 every year. Shiv Sena Tiswadi taluka coordinator Sameer Chari said government. was least bothered about the labour community
