Nets violating wildlife removed from Raia

MARGAO: The nets put up by a fish farming person at Novor Khazan in Raia village have been removed after a resident complained that it was in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act.

Besides, Deputy Collector Roshell Fernandes has issued a notice to Forest Department, Margao to inspect and submit a report by June 17.

The Raia resident, Sleeton Fernandes had reportedly lodged a complaint that gross violation of wildlife protection has been witnessed at Novo Khazan in Raia resulting in the death of birds. Certain fish farming persons, who undertake seasonally pisciculture activities in the wetland areas, have erected fine nets at a height of above three metres thereby trapping certain kinds of birds of prey like Osprey eagle and Black Parakeets which has eventually resulted in their death by strangulation.

On the other hand, the Range Forest Officer at Margao had stated that the concerned person was warned of strict action. However, Sleeton, complained to the Dy Collector in this regard and urged for action. Accordingly the Dy Collector issued the notice to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest.
