BELGAUM: The long-pending issue regarding a new bypass along the Panjim-Belgaum NH4A via Peeranwadi may be resolved, with a proposal for a new flyover to offer a faster route for vehicles proceeding from Goa towards Kolhapur and Hyderabad.
According to NHAI authorities and civic authorities from Belgaum, both proposals that are expected to give relief to the people of Goa are expected to be implemented on priority. Both the proposals are also expected to save valuable time of commuters from Goa.
Divulging details during the meeting that was convened here on Tuesday, District In-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi said the 11-km Peeranwadi-Halga by pass on NH4A has taken more time for implementation due to stiff resistance by the farmers who are worried of losing their fertile lands during the course of implementation.
“If the Kolhapur-Dharwad bound vehicles from Goa and Khanapur take a diversion on this proposed by pass, traffic in Belgaum city is expected to come down by more than 50 per cent, giving relief to commuters from Goa and citizens of Belgaum,” Jarkiholi said directing the officials to expedite all possible measures so that the work on the by pass may be taken up at the earliest.
During the meeting, Jarkiholi also unfolded the plan regarding construction of a 2.2-km flyover connecting major circles in the city, where traffic congestions on the city roads will come down while vehicles entering from NH4A too would get a clear passage.
A company from Pune that was awarded the contract of survey regarding the flyovers in the city has submitted the report and estimate to the district administration.
According to the survey, the 2.2-km flyover will cost Rs 100 crore and will be implemented within a period of one year.
Jarkiholi who has taken up the matter on priority said both the proposals have been forwarded to the state government for approval which is expected soon.
