MARGAO: Sticking to their plan of having a review meeting every 15 days, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), Margao MLA and Goa Waste Management Waste Corporation (GWMC) met on Friday to take stock of the work underway at the Sonsoddo dump site.

MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar and councillors such as Sadanand Naik and Camilo Barreto, local MLA Digambar Kamat and GWMC Managing Director (MD) Levinson Martins were present for the meeting. Shirdokar stated that all the major tasks they had discussed at the last inspection had been completed within a week’s time.

He added that a decision was taken to form a new committee that would be chaired by MMC Chief Officer and consist of councillors and engineers, which would periodically check on the progress of the bioremediation work at Sonsoddo, thrice a week. Barreto, who heads the MMC’s garbage and sanitation committee is also part of this committee.

Shirodkar added that the next inspection will take place on December 9 at Sonsoddo, where an office has been opened to monitor the various works. Martins stated that such meetings are important as it would ensure that GWMC meets its deadline of February 2023 as ordered by the High Court, to complete the bioremediation work at the legacy dump site.

He however denied all allegations about the ongoing work being unscientific, and the quality of inert that is being produced and dumped at a second location in Fatorda. He stated that the work was being carried out as per the guidelines.

Martins also visited the shed for the treatment plant at Sonsoddo and expressed concern about the quantity of daily waste generated.
