New Market and Gandhi Market in Margao are open

Sudden spurt in roadside fruit, vegetable vendors; Fish sold at affordable price

MARGAO: While SGPDA market remained closed on Tuesday in Margao, the New Market and Gandhi Market were thrown open to public with some stores selling provisions. Surprisingly, the staple food of Goans fish was sold by roadside vendors. 

Interestingly, there is sudden spurt in roadside vendors of fruits and vegetables who were selling the products packed in plastic bags for fixed prices ranging from Rs 40 to Rs 80 and things available were potatoes, tomatoes, onions, coriander leaves, etc.

Two persons were selling fish at the SGPDA market but by the roadside. While one claimed to have got the mackerels from Betul, the other said he purchased the “kombale” from a vehicle that had come to town. While six medium sized kombale were sold for Rs 200, mackerels were sold in portions for Rs 400.

At Navelim, former MLA Avertano Furtado arranged for sale of mackerels and squids that were frozen indicating that they were brought from the cold storage where they were kept for exports.

The fish was quite decently priced with mackerel sold at the rate of Rs 200 per kg while squids were sold for Rs 300 per kg.

On Monday, Chandor Sarpanch had arranged for vegetables and fish to be sold in the village and Sarpanch Edward D’Silva disclosed that Yuri Alemao helped him get the fish that was sold in the village.

However, the general stores in Chandor have not received any supplies and most of them remained shut, with people depending on the vegetables and fish arranged by the panchayat. Edward vide a letter has asked MLA Clafasio Dias to intervene and use his good offices with the government to ensure that provisions are supplied to the general stores in the village.
