MARGAO: Claiming to have suffered heavy losses due to government curfew as the goods were damaged by rain and rats, Margao’s New Market traders have sought financial help from the government.
However, the traders thanked the authorities for allowing them to reopen the market.
Speaking to the media persons a shop owner Bharati Naik complained that she has suffered the loss in thousands of rupees.
“We have noticed several goods perished due to expiry. We cannot sell the goods with an expiry date, as the customer will be cheated. Hence, all goods purchased before the curfew have to be thrown out into the dustbins”, she said.
Babu Shirodkar, a vendor said he had closed his shop for two months during the lockdown period in 2020. “Now yet again we were forced to shut down our business due to the curfew imposed by the government in wake of COVID cases. We have suffered a lot. Hence, we request the government to help us financially”, he requested.
Besides, Prashant Kaskar and Rajesh Kunkoliekar, vendors in the New Market, also claimed to have suffered losses in thousands of rupees.
“I have a small shop in the market and opened it after nearly one-and-half months and found most goods damaged by rats”, said Rajesh.
Pradeep Borkar said he too suffered a loss during the curfew period, as goods mostly eatables have been damaged. He said the government should provide some financial help to recover from the losses.
