New mayor to focus on garbage

PANJIM: The newly elected mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji, Shubham Chodankar highlighted that dealing with the city’s garbage was one of his top most priorities, as he took charge of the office Saturday.

“Panjim, being the capital city, receives most number of people. Besides traffic and parking problems, garbage has been a long pending issue that will be addressed,” Chodankar said.
The BJP corporator who was elevated to the post of mayor unopposed, also put the Panjim market and the St Inez creek as other areas that he would pay attention to. “We have planned to make a detailed study of all these issues, meeting with citizens and experts in respective fields, for best results. Of course our aim will be to put things in place and do things for a positive change,” the new mayor said.
Chodankar wishes to improve the system of parking and pay parking using better plans and infrastructure. He also said the issue of garbage in Mala was to be sorted out by shifting the processing site to the area behind Heera Pump.
As for the finances of CCP, about which even ex-mayor Surendra Furtado always complained, Chodankar said the government had said it would fund the corporation well.
Recently elected Panjim MLA Siddharth Kuncolienkar showed his support to the newly-elected CCP mayor and also attended the ceremony. On the issue of casinos and whether there were plans to move them out of the Mandovi, Kuncolienkar said the decision was with the cabinet, adding that whatever decision was taken would be for the city’s benefit. Atanasio Monserrate backed Edward Jorge, who was also elected unopposed took office as the deputy mayor, Saturday.
