CANACONA: An electricity transformer located in a residential area went up in flames at Karashir-Moll, Agonda, on Saturday night.

The 100 KVA capacity transformer was completely burnt at about 9 pm, before locals alerted the electricity department and succeeded in bringing the fire under control.

Most residents were inside their homes, when a burning smell brought some of them out of their houses.

They were shocked to find the recently installed transformer in flames and what also surprised them was the fact that they had power supply even when the transformer was engulfed in flames.

Locals alerted the electricity department maintenance section at Agonda and linemen got the supply cut off to the entire Agonda village from the power station at Char-Rasta.

After notifying the fire services, locals later succeeded in extinguishing the fire.

Since the burnt transformer was servicing over 50 households in the locality, the electricity staff later made alternative arrangements to provide supply to all affected households.
