New twists to varsity council elections

PANJIM: The Goa University Council polls will have new twists this year as the traditional Congress and BJP supported candidates will have to compete with independent nominees.

Students associations – Voice of Students and Rakhon Manch – have resolved to contest the GU council elections to eradicate the political culture in student elections.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Voice of Goa President Akshay Madkaikar said, “To remove the party culture from Goa University elections Voice of Students and Rakhon Manch have come together to contest the polls.”
Madkaikar revealed the problems faced by the students which are never resolved by the GU council. “What does university council do? There should be proper bus facilities to go to Goa University, transparency in the revaluation system, decrease in high fees and increase in examination timing for BA and BCom students answering 80 marks papers,” he said, assuring to resolve these matters.
The dual association will submit a memorandum to Inspector General of Goa Police Sunil Garg, demanding no political influence in university election and also to complain about the number of threatening calls candidates are getting.
The Council elections are scheduled to be held from July 30 to August 14. On July 30, university class representative elections will be held followed by university faculty elections on August 7. The Executive Committee of Students will be elected on August 24.
