VASCO: Following representation from the residents of New Vaddem in Vasco who have been facing threat of landslides, the South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar on Wednesday assured to take up the issue before the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
According to the residents, their structures are located atop the hill in New Vaddem and close to the railway line which is passing below the hill.
They complained that last year a landslide occurred just below the same hill, after a huge boulder came down crashing. “We have been living in constant fear from landslide and if no protective measures are taken up before forthcoming monsoons, then, there are high possibilities that many houses located on the edge of the hill might collapse due to landslides,” a local resident said.
Municipal Councillor Yatin Kamurlekar, representing New Vaddem, said, “Today when our MP Narendra Sawaikar was campaigning in New Vaddem area, we approached him and requested to take up the issue on priority and to provide some relief to the residents living under fear.”
“Since the hill potion falls under the jurisdiction of railways, the local body has now powers to take up any protective measures. Therefore, we requested Sawaikar to take up issue before Prabhu,” Kamurlekar said.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that after giving patient hearing to the residents, Sawaikar assured them that he would shortly bring the issue to the notice of Prabhu and would seek his intervention so that some sort of protective measures can be taken before any landslide takes place.
