The Valpoi market complex, the dream project of local MLA Vishwajeet Rane, today looks like a pond as rain water has leaked through the roof and vendors are worried this could lead to accidents due to electricity seepage.
The dilapidated old market building was demolished and the new complex with advanced features was constructed.
It was Rane’s dream project as it would bring in revenue to Valpoi Municipal Council. The building was completed despite hurdles from vendors who were demanding more space than they were earlier occupying. The matter even went to the court and the project’s completion was delayed. The matter was finally cleared and the project was competed.
In the last four months, about 90 percent of the vendors have started their business in the new building but vendors are facing problems, including lack of customers and water leakage. Vendors complained that in the last month, water was pouring through the roof, making it difficult and risky for them to continue with their trade. Some vendors said water is running down the walls, which could lead to electric shocks, as in some shops water is entering the electric board.
Vendor Ajit Haldankar said a complaint has been made to VMC and they have assured to look into the matter. “We demand that the matter be expedited because it is a question of our safety and livelihood,” Haldankar said.
Another vendor Suresh Zarekar said it was becoming difficult to run the business due to the water leakage and customers too turn away from the market because of water leakage
Another vendor Premanand Kesarkar said businesses running on the second floor of the complex were most affected due to the rain.
The building was constructed by GSIDC and the contractor is liable to undertake repairs for three years from the time of construction.
