PANJIM: In a startling case, a newly-married young woman’s body was found dumped at Old Goa. While the police initially did not suspect any physical injury on her or foul play, a post mortem ascertained that the woman had been raped and strangulated, prompting Old Goa police to register a criminal offence against unknown persons.
North Goa Police have formed a 15-member team to nab the culprit(s). “A case of unnatural death was initially registered, but when the autopsy report revealed rape and strangulation, we have booked a case under section 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of IPC against unknown (culprits),” a police officer said.
The body of the woman, in her mid 20s, was found between Old Goa Helipad and Gondalim Bridge on Wednesday after which it was sent for a post mortem at Goa Medical College. Based on the autopsy report on Thursday, the FIR of unnatural death was converted into rape and murder.
Sources said the woman used to sell candles at Old Goa for her living and on the day she was found dead, her parents were away at work.
Further details of the case are awaited as police are still collecting information about the victim and her family.
