NGO disputes PWD’s claims on potholes in Calangute

Allege public funds wasted;potholes have resurfaced on the hot-mixed roads; scoff at claims made by senior Public Works Department (PWD) officials recently about there being no potholes in the coastal village

CALANGUTE: The Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) has disputed the claim made by senior Public Works Department (PWD) officials recently about there being no potholes in the coastal village.

CCF president Premanand Divkar said they had done a survey of all the roads in Calangute around two years ago and counted around 200 potholes and dilapidated spots on the roads which they had marked on the road plan. “We had identified at least 200 potholes, taken photographs and marked them on the plans and given to the PWD.

“If the PWD says they have hot mixed 27kms of roads in the last two years then they should either show us the stretchor we will show them the roads with the potholes and which are in a dilapidated condition now and how they were two years ago,” Divkar said. “Instead of making false claims, they should undertake proper repairs because the potholes which they repaired have resurfaced. This is a waste of public funds. They should make a proper plan and carry out hot-mixing using quality material so that it is not washed away in the rain,” he said.

Earlier, senior PWD officials including chief engineer Allen Pereira had visited Calangute after the panchayat members had criticised PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral for step-motherly treatment of the village and neglecting to repair the roads here. After the visit, Pereira had claimed that there are were no potholes stating, “In the last two years, the PWD has carried out road hot-mixing works on 27kms in Calangute constituency at a cost of Rs 22-crore.”
