NGO “Goenkar’ winds up free distribution of cotton bags after handing out over thousand bags

CANACONA: A Canacona based NGO ‘Goenkar’ working relentlessly to reduce generation of plastic waste wound up their unique project of replacing plastic carry bag with a sturdy cotton bag after distributing 1250 bags over a period of four weeks in Chaudi market in central part of Canacona. 

While giving details of the project General Secretary of ‘Goenkar’ Mr. Vikas Bhagat said that after looking at the numbers of plastic carry bags strewn in and around Canacona they decided to replace the plastic bags shoppers carry with a sturdy cotton bag hundred percent funded by the over 75 members of ‘Goenkar’. Bhagat said that the project was started four weeks ago with active participation from the Chairperson of Canacona municipality Ms. Chaya Soiru Komarpant and deputy Chairperson Sham Sundar Desai, Councillor’s Hemant Naik Gaonkar, Kishore Shet, Divakar Pagi, Guru Komarpant and other councillors.

Since Saturday weekly bazar at Chaudi draws a sizeable crowd to purchase their requirements the members of ‘Goenkar’ lead by its president Jack Fernandes and other office bearers with active participation of council members distributed more than 1250 cotton bags manufactured by Mahila Mandal of Canacona. “Today Canacona Mandal president Chaya Pai Khot was present with us as we concluded the free distribution of cotton bags at Chaudi, we also intend to donate about thousand bags to each of the nine wards of Canacona municipality” said president of ‘Goenkar’ Jack Fernandes
