PANJIM: Human Rights Defenders, an NGO, on Monday said they have written to the Central Vigilance Commissioner informing that the Vigilance Department and Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) are incompetent to recover the loss suffered by government due to the beach cleaning scam.
Addressing the media, Human Rights Defenders, President, Advino Fernandes said, “Since the Lokayukta proceedings recommend that this case may be given to CBI, we the members of HRD cannot understand the reason for why Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar did not act swiftly and took 80 days to decide to accept the recommendation of the Lokayukta regarding reinvestigation of this case by Anti Corruption Branch .”
He added, “The Lokayukta proceedings also state that constant and continued passing of inflated bills, particularly the claim relating to the administrative expense, is indicative of the fact that the officials of the Tourism Department had failed to perform their duties properly which resulted in huge loss to the government.”
He further said that since ex-Tourism Director Sanjeev Gauns Dessai is now heading the Vigilance Department, HRD has written to the Central Vigilance Commission. The group has also demanded to know whether the government is capable of reimbursing the money or not and if yes, then how many months this would take.
