NGO threatens legal action against Margao civic body if it ignores HC’s feast fair directives

MARGAO: Petitioner Raison Almeida from the Green Goa Foundation issued a stern warning to the Margao Municipal Council on Wednesday, threatening to pursue contempt proceedings in the High Court if the civic body failed to execute the directives regarding the feast fair in Margao.

Almeida revealed that notices had been dispatched to all relevant authorities in addition to the Margao Municipal Council.

“The primary and most crucial requirement is to secure a power connection at the venue, along with the installation of CCTV cameras,” Almeida emphasised. He expressed concern that the feast fair had deviated from its original purpose and had become a racket, causing undue hardship to residents of Madel, Fatorda, due to authorities’ failure to adhere to court directives.

Almeida pointed out that in December 2023, the fair was permitted to run for 10 days, directly contravening the court’s ruling. He cited the inadequacy of fire safety measures, which resulted in a tragic incident where a fire broke out at the fair, leading to loss of life.

“The civic body has a recurring pattern of initially committing to a seven-day duration for the fair, o nly to extend it at the last minute,” Almeida alleged. He claimed that this tactic deprives the citizens of Margao of the opportunity to seek legal recourse through the courts.
