PANJIM: Social organisation WE (Why Exclude?) has urged all the 40 legislators of the State Legislative Assembly to unanimously support the Private Members’ resolution to stop discriminatory and annihilating widowhood practices, when it is taken up for discussion during the budget session on March 31.

“The name of Goa’s Legislative Assembly will be marked in history as a torch bearer of social reform if the legislators unanimously accept the resolution and work towards putting an end to these practices trampling on the basic rights of a fellow human being,” asserted WE.

“WE has interacted with thousands of widows across the State. We want to put on record that their plight is more or less the same, irrespective of religion, caste, creed and even social status. From the time her husband dies, till the time of her own death, every widow has to go through discrimination, social humiliation and even harassment and insults at times. Her troubles escalate even further if she is a person with disability (PwD). Funerary practices followed in many parts of Goa inflict great agony on the widow, who is already going through very harrowing times due to the death of her husband,” stated WE.

“Stopping the discrimination will not cause any loss or harm to the society, but will give a new lease of life to the woman tagged as a widow,” they added.
