VASCO: Extension of the Vasco Saptah fair by Mormugao Municipal Council beyond August 12 was strongly objected by Niz Goenkar Revolution Front (NGRF) on Monday. NGRF General secretary Prashant Vasta opined extension of Saptah could mean a contempt of judicial directives.
While speaking to media on Monday, Vasta made a demand that the South Goa Collector, Dy Collector and MMC Chief officer do not permit the extension of Saptah Fair as it could mean a contempt of judicial directives.
Supporting his demand, Vasta claimed that there was news that MMC is likely to extend the fair till August 15 as many stall vendors didn’t manage to do business as compared to previous years due to rains. Vasta also made allegations that some vendors had approached him stating that every stall would be charged for extension.
“We have also received news and we have also been approached by some vendors that every outlet will be charged for the extension of fair but the huge amount of money collected will not go into the MMC kitty. There is no business as it is in Vasco and the MMC must not give them any extension to Saptah fair and if the MMC gives extension , we at NGRF will file a case on MMC,” Vasta revealed.
Vasta further said that there are clear cut judicial directives that a fair cannot be extended beyond seven days. “And if still such things happens then the chief officer and chairperson of municipality could be held responsible for the contempt of court,” Vasta added.
Vasta pointed out that MMC has never shown courtesy towards local traders who face inconvenience and losses due to Saptah vendors. “No local vendors will be in business for the next one month since people have already brought stocks in Saptah,” Vasta added.
