NGT orders inspection of Galgibaga beach

CANACONA: Disagreeing with the submissions of the Dy Collector and GCZMA on removal of the illegal structures at the turtle nesting beach in Galgibaga as directed in its earlier order, the National Green Tribunal directed the deputy collector and SDO, Canacona, the member secretary of GCZMA and a district judge to jointly inspect the site along with the petitioner and submit the compliance or non-compliance of its order.

The joint inspection is to be carried out on June 6.
In a landmark order passed by Justice VZ Kingaonkar (Judicial Member) Hon’ble Dr Ajay A Deshpande, (Expert Member), the tribunal stated, “F M Misquita, appearing for Dy Collector, states that all illegal structures within the turtle nesting areas have been removed. This statement is supported by the advocate for GCZMA and others.
NGT order further says, ‘The applicant, however, disputes the statement and submits that the persons who had erected such temporary structures got them removed of their own only to the extent of upper part of temporary structures, which can be replaced and the platforms are still in existence, which are required to be demolished. He submitted that the fact can be verified by appointing a committee.”
Upholding the petitioner’s dispute, NGT ordered “At the request of the applicant, we direct the deputy collector and SDO, Canacona, the member secretary of GCZMA and the retired district judge A D Salkar, whose transportation and honorarium be shared by the respondent nos 8 to 25 shall visit the area in question and inspect such compliance or non-compliance of NGT.”
