CANACONA: The National Highway 66 road at Dapot, Loliem witnessed a spillage of iron ore pellets over 500 metres of the road after the tailgate of the truck carrying these pellets broke opened, on Friday morning.
Sources at the Canacona Fire Station informed that after receiving a call from the Canacona Mamlatdar Office, the fire officials tasked in to clear the road of the iron pellets on the highway to make safe way for the moving traffic on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi.
According to local the sources, the incident happened when the tailgate of the iron ore pellets laden truck coming from Karnataka and proceeding to a factory in Sanvordem broke, spilling the iron pellets to almost a stretch of 500 metres on the highway causing a dangerous situation for the motorcyclists and inconveniencing the other vehicles.
As the spilled iron pellets were creating a risky situation for the commuters, the locals immediately informed the authorities after which the fire and emergency crew cleared the iron pellets from the road.
Santan Costa, former panch of the ward in which the incident happened speaking to Herald informed that the tailgate of the truck opened up after it bumped over a speed breaker at Dapot in Mashem.
“I with the help of other locals tried to clear the road by using brooms as it was dangerous for the two wheelers to manoeuvre over these round pallets, as it was too difficult to remove the pallets strewn on half-a-kilometre of the road the fire and emergency crew arrived and cleared the road,” Costa added.
