PONDA: Seeking to reassure its investors, Quepem Urban Cooperative Society Chairman Prakash Velip has stated that nine of the loan applicants have cleared their dues, while others are in the process of clearing their dues.
Speaking to reporters in the aftermath of the fraud involving several crores of rupees at the Shiroda branch of Quepem Urban Co-operative Credit Society Ltd, Velip confirmed that nine loans had been cleared. “Two more defaulters had also met the society to clear their loans. But I am not sure how many defaulters had contacted the society today as we were busy in out meeting at Panjim. We have taken the matter very seriously and a police complaint may be filed on February 14, as some time is needed to study the cases and to seek legal advice,” said Velip. “Our target is to recover the loans within six months. Even after an FIR is filed with the police, the defaulters can be allowed to settle their dues,” he added. Meanwhile, Ponda Police confirmed that they were yet to receive a complaint regarding the fake gold scam. Sources had told Herald that many defaulters have been running from pillar to post to mobilise funds to clear their loans, to prevent being arrested by the police.
