No chai during Ganpati

SANGUEM: The seven days of Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Sanguem has its own uniqueness in the town area.
During the first seven days of Ganesh festival, all the tea stalls cum eateries remain closed – a tradition followed for decades.
The Sanguem town has five tea stalls cum eateries all located within a distance of 10-15 metres from each other; therefore, even if one of them remains open during the festival, it would be making brisk business. However, notwithstanding the volume of business one would make when other restaurants remain closed, none of the five tea stalls cum eateries remain open during the Chaturthi festival.
However, a newly inaugurated Monginis outlet and Bangalore Bakery remain open during the festivities catering the visitors to the town.  However, they do not provide the much preferred ‘bhaji pao’ which Goans relish during mid tea break.
Incidentally, while earlier the people had the option of getting the ‘bhaji pao’ at a tea stall located at Dando about 1.8 kms from the town, it was also found to be intermittently closed during the days of Ganesh celebrations leaving people with no other option but to travel all the way to Curchorem, a distance of seven kilometres, to have a cup of tea and that too only at Udupi hotels, because the Goan run hotels in Curchorem also stand closed during Ganesh celebration.
A resident from SanguemJosinho D’Costa termed the closure of all tea stall in Sanguem during Ganesh break as unique in itself.
